Boycie's here for big switch-on!

The Huddersfield Daily Examiner, 10 November

ONLY Fools And Horses star John Challis, alias Boycie, will be one of the celebrity guests switching on this year's Christmas lights in Huddersfield.

He will be joined by Huddersfield Giants' New Zealand international Robbie Paul on the Home FM stage.

The big switch-on will take place at 6pm on Thursday, November 17, in the Piazza followed by the Kingsgate shopping centre lights at 6.30pm.

In addition, the popular Christmas train will be running throughout the festive period on November 24 and December 1, 3, 8, 10, 22 and 23.

The Christmas market also starts on November 17, running until Sunday, November 20, in Victoria Lane, behind the public library.

Following the Christmas lights switch-on there will be the return of the popular Spanish Festival of Light, which will light up St George's Square.

Once again it will celebrate the start of the renowned Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

The town centre will be transformed with an event called El Foc del Mar.

"This colourful fiesta and procession of sparklers, firecrackers and Roman candles will see troupes dancing to the strains of a percussion band as they weave their way through the streets and crowds," said a spokesman for Kirklees Cultural Services.

Performers Xarxa are coming to Huddersfield from Spain.

The event starts at 7pm in St George's Square and finishes at about 8pm when a spectacular structure, inspired by the artist Miro will be set on fire.
